Problem Disaggregation

In an ever-changing business environment, we are daily forced to make decisions with little information or vast amount of complex data. We are continually under pressure to present recommendations based on limited information or uncertainties.

Managers often make wrong decisions or spend a lot of time on analyzing various scenarios and even digressing towards muddled solutions which often come back to haunt them.

Problem Disaggregation offers an approach to discover the core of the problem and to explore solutions through a hypothesis-driven problem solving technique.

The participants will explore all options around the main problem and focus on the most likely causes first. Participants will learn to distinguish between a good and bad problem statement. We focus on how to link the hypothesis tree to an actual workplan and communicate it in a clear and precise way with plausible arguments.

The tools and learnings from this workshop can be used on a strategic level as well as an operative level.

Workshop objectives:

  • Disaggregate the main problem
  • Define what a good problem statement is and a bad problem statement
  • Communicate the problem clearly and precisely
  • Build strong arguments

The workshop approach:

  • Problem statement using SMART model
  • Issue Tree
  • Hypothesis Tree
  • MECE principle to test for clarity and completeness
  • SCQA framework for an engaging introduction

Structured Thinking and Delivery

Business communication today is often unclear and poorly structured, with an excess of data but little real insight. The adoption of new technologies and "stream of consciousness" communication only makes matters worse, raising the importance of organized and logical thinking for managers to succeed and have impact.

Surprisingly however, few people have any tools or training to help them put together a clear, logical piece of communications.

NotaBene's objective is to enable managers and leaders to become more concise, clear, logical and thus more effective. We achieve this through the introduction of the Structured Thinking and Delivery methodology and by hands-on practice through numerous small case studies.

Workshop objectives

  • Structure compelling, engaging and persuasive communications by using the knowledge of Single Minded MessageTM
  • Force clarity and simplicity into all interactions – from day-to-day email writing to sales pitches and formal presentations - to make them more efficient and reduce the time spent on meaningless communications
  • Identify the information that is essential and relevant to the core message and form a logical argument to support the conclusion in a way that others can be engaged in meaningful dialog
  • Gain practical tips on how to make presentations, documents, emails and verbal communication more succinct and achieve more impact

To meet these objectives, we focus on 4 core elements in building an effective piece of communication:
1. Grouping and structuring information
2. Developing meaningful Single Minded MessagesTM
3. Building logical arguments to support recommendations
4. Engaging the audience through story telling

Our approach is based on some of the best practices in consulting and communications such as the pyramid principle and simple story telling.

Workshop approach
To be successful we require a change of behaviour in how participants develop and present ideas. Therefore we must maintain participants’ active engagement throughout the course. To do this, we combine teaching methods and focus on “Monday Morning” actions.
  • Focus on case studies, group discussion and debriefing afterwards
  • Participants bring a current presentation or piece of communication to work on throughout the course
  • A single page framework
Advanced Presentation Skills

On a daily basis we are inundated with an information overload. Meetings and presentations are expected to be short and precise, yet we are expected to delivery a set of complex data or information.

Often we fail to get our message across when presenting in front of an audience, this can be for a number of reasons not least because of the pressure to be short and precise. Leaving our audience confused and not knowing the specific takeaways nor the overall point of the message.

Advanced Presentations Skills focus on delivering the message to an audience in a short and concise fashion. It is about stepping outside your comfort zone and present more convincing manner. We will do this by applying storytelling, Structured Thinking and Delivery tools and analyze the body language. We will look at the value of preparation - and paradoxically, how the better prepared you are the better equipped you are to change your mind about which option to take when you are up against it. We will also look at handling difficult questions whilst maintaining confidence.

NotaBene's Structured Thinking and Delivery approach sets the foundation and is therefore considered a prerequisite. The session focuses on getting your point across with sound logical arguments. For further details please read the workshop description.

 Workshop objectives:

  • Develop and refresh current skills of Structured Thinking and Delivery
  • Move to a higher level of presentation skills
  • Present confidently in front of a group
  • Tailor content and delivery for different audiences
  • Explain the importance of body language in the listening process
  • Develop an action plan to improve communication skills

The workshop approach:

Key aspect of the session is video taping the participants when presenting and to give each participant individual feedback. They will have a before and after video, to be able to see their development throughout the workshop.

The learning style is a combination of presentation, interactive discussions, breakouts, presentation and feedback and 1:1 coaching.

Team Dynamics

The modern workforce demands collaboration between individuals. We interact throughout the organization whether it is with executives, employees and suppliers and external stakeholders. However, results are often far from their desired goals.

One might encounter personality clashes and miscommunications, which results in suboptimal solutions and prevents assignments from being completed on time.

Teams that work well together, are extremely productive and profitable.

Team Dynamics focuses on the basis of high-performance teams, where participants learn how the team depends on a shared mission, vision and values to align their personal interests. Participants will define and establish clear roles and responsibilities. They will achieve a framework for making decisions and resolving conflicts and learn how to kick off teamwork successfully. We will work with multi directional influencing, and learn how to react towards different leaders, in order to optimize mutual understanding. These criteria are essential when putting together a high performance team.

Workshop objectives:

  • Putting the most efficient team together
  • React to different leaders and employees
  • Understand the multi directional influencing
  • Define clear roles and responsibilities in the high performance team

The workshop approach:

  • Models and tools for Multidirectional coaching will be a part of the workshop
  • The Five Dysfunctions of a team
  • Elements of good meeting kick off overview

Coaching

There is an ever increased expectation and demand towards executives and managers.

Individuals often lack the ability to perform at their best due to personal challenges, which results in suboptimal solutions.

Professional/executive coaching can take two forms; either where an individual comes to a coach for advice on work-related issues, or where a company employs a professional to coach its employees in-house. In both cases, the range of issues that a coach might address would be similar, for example:

  • identifying core competencies and interests
  • improving motivation
  • developing better leadership/management skills
  • managing relationships with subordinates/superiors/peers
  • addressing work/life balance
  • improving interpersonal communication
  • developing better presentation skills
  • managing stress
  • developing conflict resolution skills

The emphasis is likely to be focused on work-related issues, but even so, the individual's personality, experiences and approach to life will play a big role in how they are performing at work and how they feel about their work life.

Effective executive coaching ideally should facilitate improvements for the individuals involved and, where relevant, the companies that employ them. Through thoughtful, provocative coaching, people can learn a lot about themselves which can help them become happier and more confident about their lives. This can then translate into positive change that benefits the individual in their personal and work life.

Our consultants are experienced in helping high-performance organizations establish and sustain cultures of coaching.
